學經歷 —— Academic Experience

初中、高中就讀省立屏東中學，1969文化大學新聞系畢業，曾任職台灣養雞雜誌社編譯、中國電視公司(China Television)新聞部特約編譯，民58年至民98年在中國郵報服務40年後退休。
I studied at National Pingtung Junior and Senior High School during my secondary studies. I then graduated from the Department of Journalism and Communication, Chinese Culture University in 1969. I worked as a translator for Taiwan Poultry Farming Magazine and as a contributing translator for the news Department of China Television. I retired after 40 years of service at The China Post (1969 to 2009).

小傳 —— Biography

余姓陳，名信夫，在二次大戰結束前即民國31年（1942），出生在屏東竹田鄉竹南村，家事務農，排行第三，上有兄姊，三歲失怙，由母親依靠幾分薄田，拉拔三個孩子長大成人，入學由於天份和本身努力，小學六年期間名列前茅，畢業時以全校第一名的成績榮獲縣長獎，這是我一生至高的榮耀。
My last name is Chen, first name Paul. I was born in 1942 in Chunan Village, Chutian Township, Pingtung, before the end of the Second World War. The third child in the family, I have two older siblings. I lost my father at the age of 3.
My mother relied on a few small plots of land to raise her three children to adulthood. Due to my abilities and hard work, I ranked top in my six years of elementary school and graduated at the top of the school with the Magistrate’s Award. This is the highest honor of my life.
民國54年帶著母親的期望，北上就讀文化學院（現任中國文化大學）新聞系，代理系主任鄭貞銘教授在新聞學的課堂上告訴我們什麼是新聞（What is the news），就開始跟新聞結下了不解之緣，在大四的時候，鄭老師延攬英文郵報創辦人余夢燕與黃遹霈為本系老師，因緣際會下，受到兩位創辦人的推薦便進入中國郵報服務，由最基層的校對做起，到外電助理編輯、編輯最後到執行副總編輯。
In line with my mother’s expectations, I went to Taipei to study in the Department of Journalism at the Cultural Institute (now the Chinese Culture University) in 1965, where the acting head of the Department, Professor Tseng Cheng-ming, taught me what is news in the journalism class. That’s when my love for journalism began.
During my senior year, I was recruited by Nancy Yu-Huang and Y. P. Huang, the founders of The China Post who were also teachers in the department.

勉勵在校生的話 —— Words of Encouragement to Current Students
在步出校門進入職場之前，要好好把握這四年的時間，多多充實自己，並確立目標，持續努力，涉獵各方面知識，要好好學習打好基礎，不斷地裝備自己。
無論從事任何行業，要堅持把它做好。
工作態度最重要，能力其次，凡事不要太計較：剛進職場要虛心學習、接受訓練，一旦表現傑出，獲得肯定，未來發展將大有可為。
Before you leave school and enter the workplace, you should make good use of these four years to enrich yourself, set goals, work hard, and learn all kinds of knowledge, and build a good foundation to equip yourself continuously.
No matter what industry you are in, you must insist on doing it well.
Work attitude is the most important thing, ability is the second most important thing, don’t be too calculating in everything: you should learn and receive training with an open mind when you first enter the workplace, once your performance is outstanding and recognized, your future development will be very promising.

轉捩點 —— Turning Point

在我們的一生中都希望能碰到一些貴人，也希望自己成為其他人的貴人，然而我遇到的貴人就是我的大舅賴永秀先生，高中畢業，為了要早點就業，我選擇提前入伍，退伍後，為要減輕母親的負擔，所以就去找當時擔任議員的舅舅看看有沒有工作機會，然而大舅就訓斥我說：「刀子鈍了要把它磨利」。不要放棄讀書只想賺錢。
After he graduated from high school, I chose to enlist in the army early to get an early job. However, my great-uncle, Lai Young-hsiu, reprimanded me, saying: “You have to sharpen a knife when it is blunt. Don’t give up on your studies for the sake of making money.”
之後就帶我北上補習，在永秀舅舅的堅持和鼓勵下考上了文化大學，我也因為永秀舅舅的那句話改變了一生。
After that, he took me to northern Taiwan for tutoring, and with the persistence and encouragement of my uncle, I was admitted to the Chinese Culture University. My life changed because of my uncle’s words of encouragements.

人生歷程 —— Life History

新聞工作是良心事業，這是我一向直秉持的信念，過去當報社副總編輯的時候，每天都從下午4點上班到翌日凌晨1：30，為了將最新的消息傳給讀者，以滿足他們的需求。
It has always been my conviction that journalism is a profession for people of conscience. When I was the deputy editor-in-chief, I worked from 4 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. every day to deliver the latest news to readers and meet their needs.
令我最印象深刻一件事就是當年造成台灣重大傷亡的921大地震，當時發生的時間是在凌晨1：45分，我秉持著新聞感，馬上從回家的路上、折返報社、停機換版，是當天獨家刊出此一消息的英文報紙，那晚雖然緊張辛苦，但是在返家的路上，走起路來有飄飄然的感覺，很有成就感。
One of the most impressive events for me was the Sept. 21, 1999 Earthquake that caused many casualties when it unfolded at 1:45 a.m. Because of my journalism sense, I immediately went back to the newspaper office, stopped printing, and changed the edition.

未來願景 —— Vision for the Future

在郵報(The China Post)工作的40年期間，歷經無數的風浪，從中獲得許多做人處事的寶貴經驗，同時也體會到英文的重要性，在這個地球村的年代，學好英文就像如虎添翼。
During the 40 years I worked at The China Post, I have experienced countless storms and gained many valuable experiences in dealing with people and the importance of English.
我將會抱懷感恩的心，繼續將學英文的方法與經驗分享給年輕學子們，相互切磋。
I will continue to share my English learning methods and experience with the young students with a grateful heart.

優秀事蹟 —— Outstanding Achievements — The China Post

郵報創辦人黃遹霈推薦下，榮獲鄭貞銘主任舉辦的新聞系第一屆傑出校友獎。
The first Outstanding Alumni Award of the Department of Journalism was presented to Paul Chen by Dean Tseng on the recommendation of the founder of the Post, Y. P. Huang.

另在鄭主任一篇「真正君子—— 陳信夫君」為題的文章中提到，陳信夫在「郵報」服務40年後退休，社長黃致祥頒給他一座「功在郵報」，這真是對信夫最貼切的推崇與肯定。
In an article titled “Paul Chen, A True Gentleman” by Dean Tseng, it was mentioned that Paul Chen retired after 40 years of service at The China Post and was presented with a “Merit in The China Post” award by President Jack Huang. (This was a fitting tribute and recognition for Paul Chen.)

陳信夫的敬業是文化大學新聞系教育可傲人的代表之一。
Paul Chen’s dedication has made him a proud representative of the Department of Journalism and Communication training, Chinese Culture University.
前英文中國郵報執行副總編輯陳信夫常說，他要做一個有良心的新聞工作者，不要做新聞的演藝人員。
Chen, the former deputy editor-in-chief of The China Post, often says that he wants to be a journalist with a conscience, not a performer in journalism.
陳信夫在文化大學新聞系就讀期間，因受英文中國郵報董事長黃遹霈和社長余夢燕女士的愛護，得以入社實習，並進而進入工作。
While studying at the Department of Journalism and Communication, Chinese Culture University, Chen was inspired by Y. P. Huang, chairman of The China Post, and Nancy Yu-Huang, publisher. He first joined The China Post as an intern and later joined the company.
在人生最精華的這四十年，他以一顆感恩的心，為英文中國郵報服務，默默耕耘，無怨無悔。
In the best 40 years of his life, he has worked for The China Post with a grateful heart and no regrets.
說來令人難以置信，陳信夫在這漫長的四十年服務郵報期間，不遲到、不早退。他說，除了在文化大學受到老師的教誨外，也受到董事長黃遹霈的精神感召。董事長是一位敬業的長者，直到逝世前一天，他仍在報社上班，這使信夫感動，也決心效法他的精神。
It is unbelievable that he has never been late or left early during his 40 years of career at The China Post. He says that he was inspired by his teachers at the Chinese Culture University and by the spirit of Chairman Y. P. Huang.
The chairman was a dedicated leader who worked at the newspaper until he died, which moved Paul Chen to follow his example.
曾當選新聞系傑出校友的陳信夫，對於母系師生感情融洽以及一股不服輸的精神印象深刻。
Chen, a distinguished alumnus of the journalism department, has also been impressed by the close relationship between his alma matter and fellow students, especially their spirit of defiance.
他認為教育要有前瞻性，當年系裡創辦英文報、攝影報，培養了無數的人才，而同學們常點著蠟燭挑燈夜戰，敬業精神就是這樣一點一滴累積起來的。
He believes that education should be forward-looking and that the department’s founding of an English newspaper and a photo magazine has helped nurture countless talents.

陳信夫有許多令我欽佩的特質 | Paul Chen has many qualities that I admire
陳信夫 (Paul Chen)先生在英文中國郵報(The China Post)服務四十年後退休，社長黃致祥(Jack Huang)頒給他一座「功在郵報」，對郵報(The China Post)而言，這真是對信夫最貼切的推崇和肯定。
Paul Chen (陳信夫) retired from The China Post after forty years of service, to which Jack Huang, publisher of The China Post, presented him with a “Merit of The China Post” award.
This was really the most appropriate recognition for Mr. Chen after he retired from the English-language newspaper.

我個人當年受黃遹霈與余夢燕師之栽培，也曾在「郵報」以「副社長兼總編輯」名義服務過一段時間，我終生感念兩位老師的提攜，也以服務「郵報」為榮。
I was trained by Y. P. Huang and Nancy Yu-Huang; and served in The China Post as “Vice President and Editor-in-Chief” for an extended period. I have been grateful for the support of these two teachers all my life, and I am also proud of serving The China Post.
信夫服務「郵報」受了兩位老師感召，也表現了文化大學新聞系的精神，一直忠誠不二地在「郵報」服務，歷時四十年，幾乎迫近我這位自命終生奉獻迄今已服務社會四十七年的「老兵」。
Inspired by them and the spirit of the Department of Journalism and Communication, Chinese Culture University, Chen has faithfully served The China Post for 40 years, almost approaching me, a “veteran” who has dedicated himself to serving the society for 47 years.
信夫至少有幾點我欽佩的地方：
Paul Chen has many qualities that I admire:
一、他的專業精神，功不僅在「郵報」，也在新聞界，因為他的服務，使新聞界終生奉獻的理想並非遙不可及，這對於新聞界的專業是可貴的榜樣。
First, his professionalism is not only at the service of The China Post, but also of the press. Because of his service, the ideal of lifelong dedication of the press is not out of reach, which is a valuable example for the profession of journalist.
二、他的飲水思源思想，顯示了他高超的人格。
Second, his thoughts about the “source of drinking water” show his superb personality.
他畢業於文化大學新聞系，對於母系，對於當年教育他的師長，從未忘懷，時時報恩，奉行張季鸞先生「報恩主義」思想，同時他堅守崗位，以實際行動證明專業教育的可能。
Since he graduated from the Department of Journalism and Communication, Chinese Culture University, he has never forgotten his alma matter and the teachers who trained him. He has pursued Chang Chi-luan’s “gratitude doctrine” while being dedicated to his job, demonstrating the possibility of professional education with practical actions.
三、他善待家人，友愛同學。
Third, he is kind to his family and loves his classmates
信夫有美滿的家庭，夫人陳秀玉女士也在「郵報」堅守崗位，努力不懈，而子女孝順，家庭和諧，是美滿的典範，同時他友愛同學，堅守承諾，熱心助人，是眾人口中的真正君子。
Mr. Chen has a happy family, and his wife, Ms. Heidi Chen, who has also sticked to her post in The China Post and made unremitting efforts. Her filial piety and harmonious family are a model of happiness. At the same time, he loves his classmates, keeps his promise, and helps others enthusiastically. He is a true gentleman in everyone’s mind.
我以有信夫這樣的一位學生為榮。
I am proud of having such a student as Paul Chen.
